Huxlee’s Success Story —
When I adopted Hux, I was given a long list of his fears because of his history of being a feral dog. I tried working through a lot of his struggles with a local dog trainer, but it just seemed they weren’t able to give us the guidance that he and I deserved. One day, I was walking Hux and a stranger reached to pet his face (too fast for me to stop the interaction) Hux nipped the person’s arm. I spent a solid amount of time beating myself up that I put both Hux and this stranger in this situation. This was a huge wake up call that Hux was really struggling and I needed to dedicate my focus to supporting him through his fear of humans. That’s when I reached out to Jenna and did a deep dive into her youtube channel, signed up for her masterclass, and immediately signed up for RRP.
The beautiful thing about RRP was that it’s about more than just his reactivity, it was a holistic approach to understand your dog on a deeper level. The lesson I talk about the most - literally to anyone who listens- is the research we had to do about our dog’s breed. I just got to understand more of Hux’s instincts and traits which gave me a solid foundation to understanding him, his likes, and his personality. This lesson put the rest of the lessons into perspective of who and what I was working with.
I am much more cognizant of Hux’s communication style. With Jenna’s guidance and support, I can now pinpoint specific behaviors Hux displays in moments of stress, frustration, and fear. Being aware of his communication, helps me take the action he needs without micromanaging his every encounter. This is definitely an ongoing process between us, but I now have the tools and knowledge of how to track his stress signals which in turn helps me track his confidence building.
The online video format for the courses made it much easier to take in the information, as well as the demonstrations at the end of many videos. When activities or lessons were a bit more confusing, Jenna was open to all of my questions during the coaching calls. The reviews, feedback, and coaching calls were incredibly helpful. Jenna has a keen eye to point out subtle behaviors that I would always miss. After receiving her feedback, I would notice her voice in my head the next time the situation came up again, “watch for Hux’s slow down when he sees another dog.”
The feedback was the most helpful for me. It was one thing to understand the technique, but it’s another to actually implement it. The feedback sessions gave me the ability to refine the techniques and adapt them to fit Hux.
If your pup is struggling with reactivity, RRP is a great investment. It empowers you as the guardian to be a lifelong advocate for your pup in these challenging situations. If you’re able to dedicate the time and energy to assisting your pup through this, then you’ll get much more out of it than just understanding their triggers.
This program gave me a different perspective on Hux. After Hux’s nipping incident, I started limiting our outdoor activities. I was so fearful that I was putting him in too stressful of situations and endangering him and someone else. RRP taught me how to observe Hux’s nuanced displays of confidence in situations which in turn allows me to celebrate his wins. It also gave me the tools to set up new experiences for Hux to make sure he thrives. Overall, it was a very encouraging and uplifting experience and I’m forever grateful for how invested Jenna was throughout our journey!
Also, it doesn’t hurt to get the constant compliments from strangers now, “you’re doing so great with your dog!” “For a fearful dog, he’s being so brave!”
